New Market Attractions And Surrounding Sights Known initially as Cross Roads, New Market was established as a town by an Act of the General Assembly in 1796. While New Market has remained a small town, the residents have been witness to history ever since the first European settlement. The North/South Indian Trail became the basis for the north/south wagon road. Rt. 11 (the first paved highway in the United States) roughly follows the early route used by travelers looking for a way to cross the Alleghenies to the west. German emigrants expanding from the Pennsylvania settlements also traveled this route. Civil War Sites The Shenandoah Valley was a very important area during the civil war as both North and South struggled for control of the “Bread basket of the Confederacy”, as the valley was called. Although New Market residents generally did not hold to the idea of slavery, they saw more than their share of the conflict, culminating with the “Battle of New Market” in 1864. The New Market Battlefield Historical Park re-enacts the battle every May.
Caverns Caverns are another stunning feature of this historic region. Endless Caverns is located just south of New Market and Shenandoah Caverns is four miles north. Luray Caverns, the largest cavern in eastern America, is located fifteen minutes east of town. Activities New Marketis a great location for a variety of activities including Fine Dining at The Congress Street Publik House Restaurant, Horseback Riding, antiquing, antique auto shows, music festivals, vineyards, sightseeing and Valley league baseball. Outdoor Recreation New Market is in the center
of outdoor recreation in the Shenandoah Valley. We are located 10 minutes
from the George Washington National Forest for hiking, biking and off
road travel. Canoeing, fishing and river rafting are also available
on the north and south forks of the Shenandoah River. Skyline Drive
and Shenandoah National Park lie a short 30 minutes to the east. Nearby
Bryce Resort offers skiing (grass and snow) as well as golf. In the
Town of New Market Shenvalee Golf Resort operates a 27-hole golf course
that is open to the public. Swimming and tennis are available at the
New Market Community Park. In season you may wish to take in a Valley League – Rebels baseball game – within walking distance to our Bed and Breakfast.
